The Shih Tzu makes a wonderful companion animal.  Their happy and lively disposition combined with their small, but not tiny, size make them a good choice for those who do not want a dog that needs a lot of exercise.

The Shih Tzu is a non-shedding breed.  Consequently, the coat will grow very long, as can be seen in the dog shows.  A Shih Tzu in full coat will require daily grooming to prevent matting of the coat.  Most Shih Tzu owners elect to keep their pet's coat shorter, in a "puppy cut" or even shorter.  In that case, the grooming required is only average, but with monthly trimming required.
