The Maltese has been a very small companion dog for at least 3,000 years, one of the most ancient breeds. Despite the small size, it is a surprisingly hardy breed, perhaps because its long history has allowed their health to be perfected. Maltese are lively, intelligent and very affectionate.
Because the Maltese coat is non-shedding, it will grow very long, as can be seen in the dog shows. A Maltese kept in full coat will require daily coat care. However, most Maltese owners keep the coat shorter, in a "puppy cut," or even shorter. When kept in a shorter coat, the grooming required for a Maltese is only average, although monthly trimming is then needed.
