The Silky Terrier (also known as Sydney Terrier) originated from
some combination of Yorkshire and Australian Terriers. Although similar in
appearance, the Silky is quite distinctly to its own breed.
This toy breed is spunky, energetic, and likes to have fun. Yet, will still enjoy snuggling close to its
master on the couch for a nice relaxing evening. They love companionship, affection, and will
provide plenty of love to their owner.
The breed is excellent for older or considerate children.
Beware of smaller children rough housing with the breed, they may become distraught
and react by nipping at the child.
The breed in considered hypoallergenic (little to no
shedding). Due to this, the coat will grow very long and “silky”. Regular
trimming and brushing will be needed. For easier maintenance, a “puppy cut” is
recommend.
Since the bred is small in size (around 10 pounds full-grown)
and active indoors, they will need minimal exercise. Daily short walks will suffice.
The average life span for a silky is 12 to 15 years.
